:: GETTING TO LITHUANIA

There are a few budget options of getting to Lithuania. Try direct connections to Vilnius or Kaunas with different airlines or fly to Riga (Latvia) and take a bus from there and in 4 hours it will bring you to Vilnius for about 16Euro. There are a few running everyday.

Try these airlines to reach Baltics:

  • Air Baltic :: Finnair :: SAS :: Norwegian

  • Ryanair flies to Kaunas or Riga from Dublin, Frankfurt, Liverpool, London, Stockholm or Tampere. Late arrival to Riga isn't a problem, there is a night Eurolines bus going from Riga to Vilnius departing 2am from Riga bus station (16eu one-way to Vilnius). We advice you to book your ticket in advance as buses could be full in summer time.

  • Worth checking out www.greitai.lt and www.avia.lt

Or take a bus: Eurolines or Ecolines

FROM FINLAND

You can get a cheap Ryanair flight from Tampere to Riga and then take night eurolines bus. Strongly advice to book bus ticket in advance, cause in summer time buses can be full.

Another option is to take boat to Tallinn and then eurolines bus. They have a brilliant offer this summer. Get return ticket for two and as a bonus recieve one-night stay in a hotel (superb view over the town from it, been there myself ;)) and it only cost 100eu altogether. Click here for more info.

:: VISIT LITHUANIA

If you decide to come to Lithuania and spend some time there, please consider visiting the following places:

RUMSHISHKES

One day trip to Rumshishkes in good weather is highly recommended. Cycling around old wooden villages spread in the area of fields and forests will take you back in time hundred of years ago.

Rumshishkes is located 25 km from Kaunas near the Vilnius-Kaunas highway. It is an ethnographical open-air museum which depicts the life of peasants during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exposition is divided according to the four ethnographical regions of Lithuania: Aukshtaitija, Dzukija, Suvalkija and Zemaitija. Each section is highlighted by buildings and farmsteads characteristic to the specific region. The majority of interior expositions display restored household articles and furniture, cloths, kitchen utensils and tools typical to one or other period. The museum also invites to active expositions where weavers, wood carvers, potters and other craftsmen work. In summer song and dance ensembles come to Rumshishkes on weekends to perform. Traditional festivals are organized in the museum, such as for Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day), Midsummer’s Day and for the harvest celebrations.

TRAKAI HISTORICAL-NATIONAL PARK

The Trakai National Park was designated in 1992 to embrace the historic city of Trakai, some 25 kilometers outside Vilnius, and the forests, lakes and villages in its environs. The total area of the park is 82 sq. kilometers. The most valuable monuments in the park are the Trakai insular castle, the remnants of the peninsula castle and the ancient site of the Senieji Trakai (Old Trakai) castle with a church and village. It was to the castle of Senieji Trakai that, according to old chronicles, the capital of Lithuania was transferred in the 14th century by the Grand Duke Gediminas. It was also there that the greatest Lithuanian ruler if all times, Grand Duke Vytautas was born. Later, the capital was transferred to the castle situated on a peninsula between the lakes of Lukas and Galve. The castle was presumably one of the largest in Lithuania of those times and served as residence for a number of Lithuanian rulers before the insular castle was constructed a short distance away on an island of Lake Galve. It became the stronghold and residence of a number of Grand Dukes of Lithuania, including Kestutis and Vytautas. It was there that Vytautas died in 1430. Ruined during the wars in the 18th century, the castle is nearing its restoration and houses an impressive History Museum at the present time.

Trakai is a small town, its main attraction being the old part, notable for the wooden houses built by the Karaites, a tribe of Turkic people who were brought to Lithuania by Grand Duke Vytautas from the Crimea and who served as his bodyguards. the Karaites' house of worship, a kinessa, and a museum of Karaite culture are places worth visiting.

In and around Trakai there are about 20 lakes, the largest of them being Lake Galve, an established centre of water sports in Lithuania. Almost one-fifth of the park area is occupied by lakes. Forests take up one-third of the park territory.

The environs of Trakai, with old villages and ancient castle hills, attract not only those interested in history but also numerous lovers of nature. In the Varnikai - Ilgelis and Plomenai nature reserves one can find a number of rare species of birds and plants. The Trakai National Park is visited by over 300 thousand people every year.

Trakai is half hour drive from Vilnius connected by often bus, train and private van services.

KURSHIU NERIJA (CURONIAN SPIT)

The Curonian Spit is a long, curved sand peninsula that separates Lithuania’s Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea, like a little slice of the Sahara in Northern Europe. Indeed the scenic spot is often referred to as the ‘desert of Europe.’ According to Baltic mythology, this natural curiosity was formed by a girl called Neringa, a child of immense strength, who was playing on the nearby shore.

Take a dip in the lagoon or hire a bike and explore the secluded bays, nearby pine forests and endless dunes, under which are said to be buried the remains of 14 villages as a result of the shifting sands. The nearby towns of Neringa and Nida have plenty of decent places to stay and, full of quirky traditional buildings, are worth exploring in their own right.

Covering an area of 18 thousand hectares, the Curonian Spit National Park was established to protect the unique scenic beauty of the Curonian Spit, a narrow peninsula separating the Kursiu Marios lagoon from the Baltic Sea. The peninsula, a sandy stretch of land extending 98 km was formed some five to six thousand years ago, as sand accumulated in the shallower waters along the Baltic coast.

The sea winds shifted the sand, creating a range of large sand dunes stretching for about 70 km from Smiltyne to Sarkuva.The largest of the dunes are up to 1000 m high and provide a charming view of the sea, the laggon and the green forests.
